The Hate U Give - Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give (2017) is the first young adult novel by African-American writer Angie Thomas. The book describes the life of 16-year-old protagonist Starr Carter, who witnessed the death of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer and then discovered the power of her own voice.

The rather shy Starr Carter lives with her family in Garden Heights, a fictional neighborhood that is predominantly black. In addition to her parents, she has two brothers: Seven, 17, and Sekani, 8, with whom she goes to Williamson High School, a predominantly white, upper-class private school far from the neighborhood. When Starr's best friend is shot dead by a police officer one evening , she becomes the center of public attention.

The book is not only about finding and using your voice, but also about individuality and the need to no longer be reduced to a skin color or origin, but to be perceived as a human being.

The story was filmed in 2018.
